Internationally-known Filipino Artists to Perform at Benefit Gala for the Philippine Women Centre of B.C.

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- On Saturday May 14, 2005, the Philippine Women Centre of B.C. (PWC of B.C.) will host a benefit gala in support of the Purple Rose Campaign (PRC), an international campaign to end the sex-trafficking of Filipino women and children.

The benefit gala will feature Vancouver's own internationally-acclaimed contemporary dancer Alvin Erasga Tolentino debuting his latest production, titled, Field.

The gala includes a panel discussion with celebrated author and international spokesperson for the PRC, Ninotchka Rosca.

Field is a creative homage to the rhythm of the rituals and spirits of the people of the Philippines. It is homage to the Philippine land and the rice field-"the lifeblood of the Filipino people" describes Tolentino of his dance creation.

Tolentino's choreography and dancing have been described as "insightful and imaginative" by dance aficionados in Canada, Japan, Switzerland, USA, Dominican Republic and the Philippines.

The first installment of Field was presented in the Philippines, France and Brussels. For the first time, Tolentino will present the complete dance presentation of Field in Vancouver.

"This initiative is really a unique event," says Marilou Carrillo chair of the Vancouver PRC. "Not only will local Vancouverites have the opportunity to experience Alvin's latest piece, but also, the patrons will have the opportunity to raise their awareness about the situation of Filipino women and children who are being trafficked for sex and profit," said Carrillo.

The benefit gala will also feature New York based, award-winning and writer Ninotchka Rosca, a former political prisoner under former Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Rosca is also the international spokesperson for the PRC.

Since 1989, the PWC of B.C. has been providing services and advocating for the needs of Filipino women, especially for domestic workers throughout the Lower Mainland. In 1999, the PWC of B.C. launched the PRC along with dozens of other Filipino women's organizations across Canada, Europe, the United States, Australia, Hong Kong and the Philippines to raise public awareness about the sex trafficking of Filipino women and children.

Last year, the PWC of B.C. lost its operational funding due to the BC Liberal governments cut backs to all women's centres and organizations.

"To have two internationally-acclaimed and celebrated personalities donating their time and prestige to the PWC and to the PRC is really exciting. We expect a successful turnout," said Carrillo.
