Filipino Community Celebrates Day to Eliminate Racism Through Cultural Performances

March 11, 2010

Sunday, March 21st marks the International Day to Eliminate Racism. Around the world, people will be calling for end of racism and discrimination.

In celebrating March 21, Filipinos in Vancouver will be connecting that history to their own struggles and achievements through hip hop, poetry, music and more as the Filipino-Canadian Youth Alliance hosts their next installment of Pinoy Poetiks.

Through Pinoy Poetiks, Filipino youth use the positive and creative outlets of Hip Hop, Poetry, and Acoustic Music to share their experience with Systemic Racism resulting in barriers to education, racial profiling and other social injustices.

This year, Ugnayan ng Kabataang Filipino sa Canada/The Philippine Canadian Youth Alliance (UKPC/FCYA) also celebrates its 15th Anniversary. Since 1995 UKPC has continued to educate, organize and mobilize Filipino youth and the community for their genuine settlement and integration and meaningful participation in Canadian society. UKPC is a volunteer run organization that relies on the support of the community for it's sustained work.

It with this spirit that we invite everyone to come join and support our community in sharing their experiences. It is through Pinoy Poetiks that UKPC/FCYA hopes to raise the awareness of the conditions faced by people of color, using the examples faced by the youth of a marginalized community.

Their will be performances by Kuyas United in Solidarity (Sol Diana & David Dennis), Margie Banda, Jill and Jordan Laxamana, and more!

Pinoy Poetiks will be held at Center A: Vancouver International Center for Contemporary Asian Art. Located at 2 West Hastings Street in Vancouver BC. Center A is host to both Pinoy Poetiks and The World Tea Party.

The World Tea Party is based on the notion that humanity shares in the drinking of tea, the most popular beverage in the world. It represents a spirit of generosity and exchange that both celebrates and transcends our cultural diversity.
